The School Board is responsible for the overall governance of the school district. The Board sets direction, adopts policies, approves the budget, oversees long-term planning, and ensures accountability for student outcomes and district operations.
Key responsibilities include:
Setting district goals and priorities
Overseeing school facilities and long-term planning
Adopting policies
Approving the annual budget
Overseeing employment contract negotiations with four Collective Bargaining Units (unions)
Hiring and evaluating the Superintendent
Under Maine law, School Boards are responsible for ensuring schools are properly maintained and operated.

The School Board does not manage the day-to-day operations of the schools. Those responsibilities belong to the Superintendent and school administrators.
The Board does not:
Manage individual employees or students
Run classrooms or school programs
Make daily operational decisions
The Board’s role is governance and oversight, while district administration is responsible for implementation and operations.
One of the Board’s most important responsibilities is hiring, supporting, and evaluating the Superintendent.
The Board:
Hires the Superintendent
Establishes goals and expectations
Conducts evaluations
Oversees the Superintendent’s contract
The Superintendent is the School Board’s only direct employee.
